While we may think that going inside our homes allows us to escape air pollution, indoor air pollution is a reality of our lives that we need to be aware of. The cooking residue, varnishes and paints, fungal spores, and dust are all polluting the air that we breathe indoors. We spend most of our day indoors, upwards of 90%, and if our places of work and homes do not have healthy air, then it can have a dramatically adverse effect on our health.

One way to help cut down on indoor air pollution is to get your air ducts cleaned. Dust, pollen, and other debris build up, and if there is any moisture present, then there can be mould growth, spores from which are then blown through the ducts and into your home. If you have a build up of any of these, which you can check via access ports in your duct system, then it may be time to call a duct cleaning service.

Generally speaking, if your return registers are dusty, then that is not a cause for concern because of dust-laden air that is pulled back through the return registers. All you need to do in this case is remove the dust with a duster or cloth. This is not a sign that you need to have your ducts cleaned.

There are things that you can do to slow down the need for duct cleaning services. Clean filters are a huge part of this. Using high-efficiency air filters that are recommended for use with your heating and cooling system. Replace filters regularly and check to see if they are clogged. Make sure that there are no missing filters. Check to see if air can bypass the filter in gaps around it and fix this issue if there is.

You should also vacuum and dust your home regularly as this will help keep allergens, spores, dust, and particles out of your duct system which will cut down on the need to have it cleaned regularly.

If you want to protect your ducts from becoming mouldy, then you have to keep moisture out. Check your home for any leaks and look around for water damage that might be affecting your ducts. Fix any leaks immediately so that water cannot enter the duct system. In a cooling system, there will be cooling coils which remove water from the air. If these are not working correctly, then this can lead to mould growth. Furthermore, the condensate pan needs to drain properly, or you will have standing water in your cooling system that needs immediate attention.

If ducts become badly contaminated then they may pose a risk to your health as it can circulate contaminates through your home. If your ducts only have a slight amount of dust though, then you are protected against any kind of serious danger.
